| Abstract | In the early 1970s, Iligan City experienced a booming economy extensively due to the establishment of various industries. This became possible since Iligan City offered cheap electric energy to many investors and company owners. This in turn attracted people from various places all over the country to seek their fortunes in this city. As a result, rapid urbanization took place simultaneously with the growth of population which resulted to a drastic increase of wastes from the citizens. In 1973, the City government of Iligan established an open dumpsite that would accommodate the growing volume of wastes collected. This open dumpsite was located in Barangay Santiago. With this, it is the aim of this research paper to trace the historical development of Barangay Santiago Open Dumpsite. This also seeks to determine the ordinances passed by the City Council declaring Barangay Santiago as an area meant for the solid waste management program of the city. Furthermore, it seeks to identify the waste characterization; its impact to the environment; and it will also investigate the current situation regarding waste management especially on issues affecting the inhabitants of the area. |
